Kolkata, June 30
Former Tripura Chief Minister and current Member of Parliament from West Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb, launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal, criticizing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for failing to ensure the safety of women in the state. Deb’s remarks came on Monday following his arrival in Kolkata as part of a BJP-appointed fact-finding committee probing the recent gang-rape incident at Kolkata’s Law College.
The probe panel, constituted by BJP national president J.P. Nadda, comprises four senior leaders: Biplab Kumar Deb, former Union Ministers Satyapal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra. The committee’s mandate is to visit the crime scene, interact with the victim and her family, and prepare a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding the horrific incident.
Speaking to the media upon his arrival at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Deb expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Bengal, particularly in relation to women’s safety. “Where 50% of the population are women, and yet, even in an academic institution like Law College, women are not safe — this is deeply troubling. These students are future lawyers. If such brutal incidents can occur in their own campus, what message does it send to society?” Deb asked.
He condemned the incident unequivocally, questioning how such crimes can continue to occur under the watch of a female Chief Minister.
“The Chief Minister is herself a woman. What excuse does her government have when such atrocities are happening repeatedly? Women have no protection under the TMC regime,”
Deb added.
The MP also pointed out the alleged political connections of the accused.
“One of the key accused in this case has a criminal background dating back to 2013. His close ties with leaders from the Trinamool Congress are well-documented through photos and public appearances. The person has a criminal record and is a known repeat offender. This shows the direct involvement of TMC members in sheltering such elements,”
Deb alleged.
Deb reiterated that the BJP would not remain silent on the issue and would fight for justice and safety for women in Bengal.
“Our committee will soon visit the location of the crime, meet the victim and her family, and submit a comprehensive report to our national president, Shri J.P. Nadda. BJP will not allow the voice of justice to be drowned in political pressure. We will fight for every woman in Bengal who has been denied safety and dignity,”
he said.
This visit comes in the backdrop of growing criticism of the TMC government over a series of crimes against women that have rocked the state in recent months. Opposition parties, women’s rights groups, and civil society members have demanded stronger law enforcement and accountability from the Mamata Banerjee-led administration.
While TMC has denied all allegations of political shielding and claimed the accused in the Law College incident will be dealt with strictly as per the law, the BJP continues to press for deeper scrutiny, alleging systematic failures in governance and law enforcement.
Political analysts believe that this move by the BJP to send a high-level team reflects the party’s growing focus on West Bengal in the run-up to the upcoming elections. The issue of women’s safety is expected to be a key agenda point as BJP ramps up its outreach in the state.
In recent years, Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb has emerged as a vocal critic of the TMC leadership and has been actively participating in BJP’s national-level campaigns, particularly those focusing on law and order and women’s issues.
As the fact-finding committee begins its ground-level inspection and meets stakeholders, all eyes will be on the findings and recommendations that may influence both public perception and the political narrative in West Bengal.
The BJP has assured that it will continue to raise its voice for justice and ensure that such heinous crimes do not go unpunished, regardless of political affiliations. The final report is expected to be submitted to BJP’s central leadership in the coming days.
