Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has said the state’s unemployment rate is now significantly lower than the national average, reflecting the government’s sustained efforts to improve the employment scenario.
Speaking at an event where appointment letters were handed over to 222 new recruits in the school education and health and family welfare departments, Saha cited data from the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s periodical labour force survey. He noted that Tripura’s unemployment rate has fallen from 10 percent in 2018-19—when the national average stood at 5.8 percent—to just 1.7 percent in 2023-24, compared to the current national average of 3.2 percent.
“This indicates that employability is higher in Tripura now,”
he said.
Since the BJP government took office in 2018, Saha said, 19,484 people have been appointed in government jobs across various departments through a transparent process free of political interference. Additionally, more than 5,700 individuals have been engaged through outsourcing in different departments, while thousands have found work in private security and other services.
Under the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation, employment has been created for another 1,617 people.
Saha, who also handles the education portfolio, emphasized the state government’s focus on improving the skills and efficiency of government employees, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. He said the efficiency level among government staff nationwide has risen from 33.95 percent to 54 percent due to Modi’s initiatives.
The Chief Minister further highlighted the state’s achievements in education, health, communication, and the development of tribal communities, adding that over ₹638 crore worth of projects have been inaugurated or launched across Tripura between January and June this year.
He credited the peace established in the region—thanks to agreements signed by the Modi government with various organizations across the Northeast—for boosting overall development.
Saha also pointed out that Tripura recently became the third fully literate state in India after Mizoram and Goa, with its literacy rate climbing to 95.6 percent as of June 23.
