Tripura School Adopts U Shape Classrooms Inspired by Malayalam Film

Tripura | July 19, 2025
A government school in Tripura has sparked national conversation by reimagining classroom layouts. The PM SHRI Sabroom Girls’ Higher Secondary School, located in South Tripura district, has introduced U-shaped seating arrangements across all classes (I–XII), aiming to foster greater inclusivity and interaction between teachers and students.

The initiative, inspired by the Malayalam political satire film “Sthanarthi Sreekuttan, seeks to remove the stigma associated with backbenchers and promote equal attention to every student. Teachers say the new arrangement has led to a noticeable increase in student participation and attentiveness.

The concept was pioneered under the guidance of the school’s administration and received full support from the state’s Education Department. NC Sharma, Director of School Education, has hailed the transformation as “a model for other schools across India.”

Following the positive outcome in Sabroom, Netaji Subhas Vidyaniketan, one of Agartala’s premier institutions, is preparing to implement the same seating format from the upcoming term.

The seating change is more than symbolic—it challenges traditional hierarchies in Indian classrooms and emphasizes student engagement as the core of pedagogy. Educationists believe it could serve as a blueprint for schools nationwide, particularly in rural or under-resourced regions.

As India continues to reform its educational landscape under the National Education Policy 2020, such grassroots innovations are being seen as crucial for equitable learning outcomes.
