Agartala, June 30
In a significant blow to the illegal drug trade, Tripura Police launched a statewide anti-narcotics crackdown on Monday, seizing contraband worth over Rs 1.5 crore and arresting six individuals involved in drug trafficking. The coordinated operations were conducted across multiple districts, highlighting the state government’s intensified efforts to curb the rising menace of drugs in the region.
According to officials, one of the biggest hauls took place in the Kamalpur sub-division of Dhalai district. Acting on a reliable tip-off, police intercepted a truck bearing a West Bengal number plate. During the search, they recovered 310 kilograms of dry cannabis hidden inside the vehicle, packed in 31 separate packets. The estimated market value of the seized cannabis is around Rs 1.5 crore. The truck driver, identified as Rabi Kumar from Bihar, has been detained and is currently under interrogation. Kamalpur SDPO Samudra Debbarma confirmed that the police are investigating possible links to a larger interstate smuggling network.
In a separate operation in East Agartala, police carried out a raid in the Lal Matia area of Maharajganj Market following specific intelligence inputs. The raid led to the arrest of four suspected drug peddlers: Rajib Roy, Mithun Das, Rahul Roy, and Bimal Bardhan. Authorities seized 1,200 small vials containing brown sugar, a highly addictive narcotic. Along with the drugs, police also recovered Rs 7,000 in cash, a mobile phone, a scooty, and a motorcycle believed to have been used in drug distribution.
Meanwhile, another arrest was made in the Dharmanagar sub-division where police detained a suspected courier carrying a small consignment of heroin. Police sources stated that the crackdown is part of an ongoing operation to dismantle well-established drug trafficking routes connecting Tripura with neighboring states and international borders.
Speaking to the media, senior police officials said that such operations would continue in the coming weeks as part of a broader mission to make Tripura drug-free. “We are determined to eradicate drug trafficking from the state. Our teams are working round the clock to gather intelligence and act swiftly against those involved in the illegal drug trade,” said a senior official from the Tripura Police.
Drug abuse and trafficking have been persistent issues in Tripura, which shares a long international border with Bangladesh. Security agencies believe that the state is often used as a transit route for smuggling drugs into mainland India. The recent seizures underscore the growing vigilance of law enforcement agencies and their commitment to tackling the narcotics threat.
Authorities have urged citizens to come forward with information on drug-related activities in their localities. Police have also intensified patrolling and surveillance in border areas and key transit routes to intercept smugglers attempting to transport drugs into or out of the state.
The latest crackdown by Tripura Police is being seen as a major step towards disrupting the supply chain of narcotics and sending a strong message to those involved in the illicit trade. Officials hope that with sustained efforts and community support, Tripura can reduce the grip of drug mafias and protect its youth from the devastating impact of addiction.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests in connection with these cases.
