Tripura Monsoon Red Alert issued as torrential rain triggers fears of floods and landslides

JULY 15, AGARTALA: Tripura is on high alert as the active monsoon has unleashed torrential rainfall across the state, leading to widespread waterlogging and raising fears of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “Red Alert” for several districts, forecasting extremely heavy precipitation over the next 48 hours.

The state capital, Agartala, witnessed severe waterlogging in low-lying areas, including Paradise Chowmuhani, Orient Chowmuhani, and parts of the Battala market, causing significant traffic disruptions and disrupting normal life. The Howrah, Gomati, and other major rivers in the state are reportedly swelling, with water levels being closely monitored by the administration.

In response, the Tripura government has put the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and district-level authorities on high alert. A senior official from the Revenue Department stated, “All District Magistrates have been instructed to be on standby. NDRF and SDRF teams are positioned strategically, and temporary relief camps have been identified in case evacuations become necessary. We are prepared for any eventuality.”

The government has also issued a strong advisory for the public, urging them to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from river banks and hilly terrains prone to landslides.

Public Safety Advisory:

  • Stay Indoors: Avoid venturing out unless absolutely necessary.
  • Do Not Cross Waterlogged Areas: Avoid driving or walking through flooded streets to prevent accidents and vehicle damage.
  • Landslide Prone Zones: Residents in hilly areas are advised to be extra vigilant and move to safer locations if they notice any signs of soil erosion.
  • Emergency Kit: Keep an emergency kit ready with essentials like a flashlight, first-aid supplies, dry food, and drinking water.
  • Emergency Contacts: Keep the numbers for the local police station, fire brigade, and district disaster control room handy.

Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and will issue further updates as the weather pattern develops.
