Tripura Livestock Insurance Scheme offers 85% subsidy on premiums for full animal coverage

Agartala, July 29, 2025 — In a major step toward rural economic security, the Tripura government has launched a comprehensive Livestock Insurance Scheme under the National Livestock Mission, aimed at protecting farmers from financial loss due to the death of animals such as cows, buffaloes, goats, pigs, and sheep.

The scheme, branded as the Complete Animal Wealth Shield, will offer full insurance coverage for livestock owned by registered farmers. Farmers are required to contribute only 15% of the insurance premium, while the state and central governments will jointly bear the remaining 85%.

“This initiative is a game-changer for our rural economy. Livestock is a vital source of income for farmers in Tripura, and this scheme ensures they won’t be left helpless if they lose an animal,” said Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das during the launch event.

The scheme has already been rolled out across all eight districts of Tripura and is expected to benefit over 25,000 livestock farmers in its initial phase. Local veterinary officers have been tasked with awareness drives and registration.

Farmers will be eligible to receive compensation equivalent to the market value of the animal upon death, after a proper verification process. The government has also promised to simplify claim procedures and reduce settlement delays.

The move is part of a broader rural development push by the state government, in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission to strengthen the agricultural and livestock sectors.
