Tripura Forms District-Wide Task Forces to Deport Illegal Immigrants
Agartala, July 18 – The Government of Tripura has constituted Special Task Forces (STFs) in all eight districts to strengthen the process of detecting and deporting illegal immigrants. The initiative comes as part of a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs, intensifying scrutiny on cross-border infiltration.
Officials confirmed that these STFs are primarily focused on identifying undocumented migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar—two countries with which Tripura shares historical and porous borders. The West Tripura district has taken the lead by establishing a 15-member task force led by DSP Debasish Saha. The team comprises officers from all 15 police stations within the district.
According to senior officials, the task forces will coordinate with central intelligence agencies, local administrative bodies, and border patrol units to verify documentation, conduct surveillance, and initiate legal procedures for deportation where necessary.
“The idea is to implement a district-level surveillance system that functions proactively and consistently across the state,”
a Home Department official said on condition of anonymity.
This development comes amid growing concerns about demographic shifts in tribal areas and rising local resentment over illegal settlement in protected zones. The move is also expected to feed into larger national-level exercises related to the National Population Register and other security audits.
Human rights observers have urged the government to ensure due process and avoid indiscriminate targeting of border communities during enforcement.
