Train Services Restored in Northeast After Landslides Disrupt Lumding-Badarpur Rail Section

Guwahati, July 5: Train connectivity across Northeast India resumed on Friday morning following a temporary suspension caused by a major landslide in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section. The disruption, which occurred on Thursday, had brought train movement to a standstill between key northeastern states and the rest of India.

The affected section, located in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, forms a vital rail link connecting South Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and other parts of Northeast India with the national railway network via Guwahati.

According to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials, the landslide between Dihakho and Mupa stations had blocked the tracks with massive boulders and loose soil, causing significant disruption to train services.

NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma confirmed that intensive restoration efforts were carried out overnight, ensuring that train services through the affected stretch could resume by Friday morning.

“The first train to run through the restored section was the Agartala–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express. Operations resumed smoothly and safely after a night-long restoration operation led by senior railway officials and engineers,”

Sharma stated.

Emergency Measures and Passenger Support

In response to the disruption, NFR swiftly activated emergency protocols. Help desks were set up at key railway stations including Guwahati, Lumding, Silchar, Badarpur, and Agartala to assist stranded passengers. Railway authorities ensured timely updates regarding train rescheduling and track restoration.

Stranded travelers were provided with food, drinking water, and medical assistance, ensuring that their immediate needs were met while the tracks were being cleared.

“Our teams worked round-the-clock, even under challenging weather conditions. We prioritized passenger safety and timely communication throughout the disruption period,”

the CPRO added.

Landslides: A Recurring Monsoon Challenge

Landslides are a frequent hazard in the hill section of the Lumding division, especially during the monsoon months from June to September. The recent disruption comes just days after train services in the same Lumding-Badarpur stretch were fully restored on June 30 following a week-long shutdown that began on June 23.

During this period, heavy rains triggered multiple landslides in the hilly terrain of Dima Hasao, repeatedly cutting off vital transportation routes between the northeastern states and the rest of India. This annual issue affects millions of people across South Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur, often delaying the delivery of essential goods and services.

Appeal to Passengers

With normalcy now restored, passengers have been advised to verify train schedules through official Indian Railways enquiry systems before commencing their journeys. Given the unpredictability of weather in the region, updates may occur in real-time depending on track conditions.

Looking Ahead

The Northeast Frontier Railway continues to monitor the Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section closely and has deployed maintenance teams in vulnerable stretches to act swiftly in case of future disruptions. The railway division is also exploring long-term mitigation measures such as slope stabilization, improved drainage, and early warning systems to reduce the impact of landslides on rail operations.
