Operation Mahadev: Pahalgam mastermind eliminated during forest encounter near Srinagar
Srinagar / New Delhi, July 28, 2025 — Security forces today carried out a decisive anti‑terror mission — Operation Mahadev — in the Harwan area near Dachigam National Park, Jammu & Kashmir. The operation resulted in the neutralisation of three terrorists, including Suleiman Shah (aka Hashim Musa), the chief architect of the deadly April 22 Pahalgam massacre that killed 26 civilians.
The action, conducted jointly by the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps, the CRPF, and Jammu & Kashmir Police, followed 14 days of precise intelligence gathering and local inputs. The terrorists were located in a concealed trench under dense forest foliage, and were neutralised in a surprise strike while they were resting.
A cache of weapons — including an M4 carbine, AK‑47 rifles, grenade rounds, and a satellite phone — was recovered from the site, highlighting the sophistication of the terrorist network. The operation reportedly began after a suspected Chinese satellite phone call was intercepted, leading forces to narrow the search area.
“The terrorists appeared fatigued, having been tracked for days without access to food or resupply,” said a senior military official. “This was a coordinated surgical operation conducted with minimal collateral impact.”
The elimination of the Pahalgam terror plotter is viewed as a major breakthrough in India’s wider counter-terror strategy. Officials confirm that Operation Mahadev is ongoing, with security teams continuing to search for any remaining associates or suspects.
