North Eastern Region District SDG Index 2023-24—The second edition of NITI Aayog’s North Eastern Region (NER) District SDG Index 2023-24 has been released, showcasing significant progress in sustainable development across the eight northeastern states. The report highlights districts from Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland as top performers, with Hnahthial district in Mizoram emerging as the highest-scoring district in the region with a score of 81.43.

- Nagaland exhibits the widest intra-state disparity, with a 15.07-point difference between its highest and lowest performing districts.
- Sikkim demonstrates the most consistent performance, with a narrow range of 5.5 points between its highest and lowest scoring districts.
Challenges and Opportunities:
Despite the progress, challenges persist in areas such as:
- School infrastructure: Significant scope for improvement in school infrastructure.
- Access to clean cooking fuel: About 75% of districts fare below the national average.
- Annual average dropout rate: 100 districts have a higher dropout rate than the national average.
The NER District SDG Index 2023-24 serves as a critical tool for evidence-based planning, efficient resource allocation, and progress monitoring. It supports localizing national flagship programs and identifying gaps at the grassroots level.
