A group of people attacked a government building in Malda, trapping seven judges inside and setting fire to a car.India’s top investigative agency has now taken over the district, and the political blame game is already in full swing.Seven judges.
One building for the government.A group of people outside wouldn’t let them leave. For seven hours, some of India’s most protected people were stuck inside a Block Development Officer’s office in Malda,
West Bengal. Outside, a crowd grew dangerous, set a car on fire, and dared the system to do something. It finally did.But they needed help from central forces to get out.
The National Investigation Agency has sent 40 officers to Malda with one job: to figure out who planned this and who thought they could get away with attacking India’s courts.

So far, 35 people have been arrested, and AIMIM leader Mofakkerul Islam has been the loudest. His arrest turns this from a local mob crime into a politically charged national case.

The NIA doesn’t send 40 officers to deal with everyday problems; the fact that they are in Malda shows how seriously New Delhi is taking what happened here.

“When a mob can hold judges hostage for seven hours in broad daylight, the rule of law is not just threatened; it is openly mocked.”Every Indian court should be worried.

—Senioradvocate, Calcutta High Court. The TMC says that the political firestorm is a “central conspiracy against Bengal.”The deployment of the NIA is for political reasons.”This is a BJP-made drama to bring down Mamata’s government.”
The BJP says, “Seven judges are stuck.”A car was set on fire, and 35 people were arrested.”This is TMC’s goonda raj—Bengal’s law and order has completely broken down.”

On the same day that the NIA landed, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was holding a rally in Malda. This was a planned counter-statement.Her message was clear: central agencies will not scare Bengal.New Delhi’s message was just as clear: this investigation will not stop. Why this shakes the whole country: The Indian judicial system is based on one basic promise:
that its officers can work without fear, pressure, or mob intimidation. What happened in Malda broke that promise right in front of everyone. No courthouse in the country can feel completely safe if judges can be held hostage for seven hours in a government building. That is why this story has spread so far beyond Bengal. That’s why the NIA is here.
Seven judges went into a government office and couldn’t get out. There are now forty NIA officers in Malda to make sure that never happens again and to make sure that everyone who made it happen is punished in a way that everyone in the country can see.
Bengal is keeping an eye on things.India is too.
