Techie Locked Inside Flat for Over 3 Years

In a heart-wrenching incident that has drawn widespread attention, a 55-year-old former IT professional, Anup Kumar Nair, was rescued last week after confining himself inside his Navi Mumbai apartment for more than three years. The shocking discovery has sparked important conversations about mental health awareness, loneliness, and the need for stronger community vigilance.

Anup Kumar Nair, once a skilled computer programmer, lived in Gharkool Society located in Sector 24, Juinagar, Navi Mumbai. According to officials from SEAL — Social and Evangelical Association for Love, a Panvel-based NGO — Nair had completely shut himself off from the outside world since the COVID-19 pandemic era. His only connection with the world outside was through online food delivery services.

When members of SEAL and the society’s residents finally entered the flat, they found the techie living in deplorable conditions. The room was filled with garbage, decaying items, and an unbearable stench. Nair was reportedly suffering from a severe leg infection, and his overall health had badly deteriorated.

Personal Tragedies Triggered Severe Depression
Nair’s self-imposed isolation was reportedly the result of a series of emotional tragedies. His parents passed away a few years ago, and his elder brother had died by suicide nearly two decades earlier. The psychological trauma left him devastated, and over time, he withdrew from society entirely.

“He never spoke to anyone, never stepped out. We only knew someone was inside because the food delivery guys kept coming,”

said Vijay Shibe, Chairman of Gharkool Society.

“Despite our repeated efforts to engage, he chose silence. Occasionally, we offered him help, even money, but he kept to himself.”

Society Resident Raised Alarm.

The turning point came when local resident Nikhil Marathe noticed the unusual situation and decided to alert SEAL.

“I had a feeling something was wrong. No one should suffer like this in silence. We must be more attentive to our neighbours, especially those living alone,”

he told Northeast Press.

Soon after receiving the call, SEAL dispatched a rescue team that managed to gain access to the locked apartment. Medical assistance was arranged on the spot, and Nair was transferred to SEAL Ashram in Panvel for physical and psychological rehabilitation.

Current Health Condition and Recovery
According to doctors and caregivers at the SEAL Ashram, Nair remains emotionally fragile but is showing early signs of physical recovery. His leg wound is being treated, and regular therapy sessions have begun. The journey to emotional healing, however, may take much longer.

In a brief conversation with caregivers, Nair reportedly expressed his hopelessness, stating,

“My parents are gone, my brother is gone, and I have no friends left. My health is also not good. So there’s no scope for a new beginning.”

Despite his bleak words, caregivers remain hopeful. “Isolation can be reversed with care, empathy, and time. We are committed to supporting Mr. Nair in his recovery,” said a SEAL spokesperson.

Importance of Mental Health and Community Awareness
This disturbing case highlights the critical importance of mental health awareness in urban areas, where individuals often fall through the cracks unnoticed. It also sheds light on how communities and residential societies can play a life-saving role simply by staying observant and taking timely action.

Experts are calling for better mental health resources, especially targeted at middle-aged and elderly citizens living alone. Social organizations and residents alike are encouraged to build stronger networks of care and communication to prevent such incidents.

Anup Kumar Nair’s story is not just a tale of isolation, but a stark reminder of the growing epidemic of loneliness and mental health neglect in India. As he begins the long road to recovery, his case stands as a call to action for all of us — to be vigilant, empathetic, and proactive when it comes to those around us.
