Tipra Motha Chief Calls for Monitoring Panel to Curb Influx of Illegal Migrants from Assam in Tribal Areas
Agartala / TTAADC, June 5, 2025 — In a renewed push to address illegal immigration concerns, Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has urged the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) to establish a special cross‑party monitoring committee to identify and track illegal migrants entering tribal regions from Assam.
Debbarma made the appeal following a meeting in Delhi where he participated in discussions with the Election Commission seeking special electoral roll revision across states. He warned that ongoing eviction drives in Assam may displace individuals who could illegally enter Tripura in search of shelter and work.
“That is why I have requested the TTAADC to form a monitoring team—across party lines—to detect such illegal entrants at the earliest,” Debbarma said, emphasizing the risk of infiltration from Assam despite ongoing crackdowns.
The proposed panel would operate under the council’s jurisdiction and is envisioned to deploy members from local governance, police, and community groups to surveil border communities and shared tribal settlements. It aims to complement central and state enforcement mechanisms led by Assam Rifles and CRPF.
In previous efforts—including a major rally in Agartala and formal petitions to the Governor—Tipra Motha leaders pressed for task force action, STF deployment, and a revision of electoral rolls to align with pre-1971 demographic norms.
While Chief Minister Manik Saha endorses the 2014 Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) cutoff, Tipra Motha has advocated a stricter 1971 cutoff and a more aggressive approach to deportation consistent with MHA directives. Critics have raised concerns about potential communal tension and effective coordination with central agencies.
The proposal now awaits formal discussion and approval in the next scheduled TTAADC session. Debbarma reiterated that ensuring tribal identity and demographic integrity remains a key priority for his party, even within its alliance framework with the BJP.
