New Delhi, June 23, 2025:

In the wake of intensifying conflict in the Gulf region following a U.S. airstrike that killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, highlighting India’s vital role in restoring peace and stability in the region.

The 45-minute phone conversation, initiated by President Pezeshkian, focused on the rapidly evolving geopolitical scenario in West Asia. According to sources, the Iranian leader expressed appreciation for India’s consistent stance on the crisis, calling it a “friend and partner” in the collective efforts toward peace and diplomacy.

India’s voice is important in restoring regional peace and stability,” President Pezeshkian was quoted as saying during the call.

He welcomed India’s principled and balanced position amidst the growing hostilities and expressed gratitude for New Delhi’s calls for de-escalation and dialogue.

Prime Minister Modi conveyed grave concern over the current escalation and stressed that all parties should prioritize dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

“De-escalation is critical to ensuring long-term peace and security in the region,” the Prime Minister stated.

In a tweet following the conversation, Prime Minister Modi wrote:

“Had a call with President of #Iran @drpezeshkian. We spent quite a while just talking about things right now. Voiced grave concern over recent escalations. Repeated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy as the key for a way forward and the early resolution of the crisis.”

The Iranian President also acknowledged India’s efforts in facilitating peace and its appeal for restraint from all parties. He appreciated India’s measured and constructive diplomatic posture at a time of heightened global tensions.

As the Iran-Israel conflict entered its tenth day, the situation became more complex with the United States openly supporting Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to target Iranian nuclear sites, calling it a “historic” move that could “change the course of global security.”

Amid these developments, India has ramped up its efforts to ensure the safety of its citizens in the affected areas. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that several evacuation flights are being organized to bring back Indian nationals stranded in Iran. Emergency hotlines and embassy support services have also been activated.

India has historically maintained strong diplomatic ties with both Iran and Israel, and in times of crisis, New Delhi’s neutral and peace-oriented approach has often positioned it as a credible mediator. With tensions threatening to spill over further in the volatile region, the international community is looking closely at India’s role in diffusing the crisis.

The ongoing conflict and its potential implications for global security and energy markets have become a matter of urgent concern for many nations. In this context, Sunday’s conversation between President Pezeshkian and Prime Minister Modi highlights India’s growing importance as a responsible stakeholder in global peace initiatives.
