Gopal Chandra Roy Attack Allegation: What Happened in Banamalipur
By Northeast Press Desk | Agartala | July 7, 2025
Gopal Chandra Roy attack allegation: Tension gripped Banamalipur in Agartala on Saturday afternoon after senior Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy was reportedly attacked by a group of miscreants, allegedly associated with the ruling BJP, while attending a party meeting in Ward No. 31. The incident occurred at the residence of local Congress supporter Babul Roy, where the meeting was being held with prior police permission.
According to MLA Roy, a group of individuals stormed the private premises, disrupted the ongoing meeting, and allegedly locked him inside a room, raising serious concerns over law and order in the state. He termed the episode as a direct assault on democratic rights and alleged that the intention behind the disruption was to inflict physical harm.
“We had obtained prior permission from the police for this meeting. Still, we were not allowed to carry it out peacefully. I was forcibly confined and threatened in the presence of police officers. This is the unfortunate state of democracy in Tripura,”
said Roy while addressing the media shortly after the incident.
Roy further claimed that despite the gravity of the situation and the presence of law enforcement officers, no arrests were made immediately. He questioned the role of the local police and demanded a full-scale investigation, immediate arrest of the culprits, and an enhancement in his personal security cover.
Police Intervention and Security Concerns
Following the incident, police officials arrived at the location and escorted the Congress leader safely back to his residence. However, the absence of swift police action on-site has sparked criticism from opposition leaders and civil society members alike. The Congress party is expected to raise the matter in the state legislative assembly and may also approach the Chief Electoral Officer and Human Rights Commission, citing security lapses and political intimidation.
Roy also appealed directly to Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, urging him to take cognizance of the incident and ensure protection for all political representatives, regardless of party affiliation.
Political Tensions Escalate in Tripura
This incident comes amid increasing political friction in the state, especially in the run-up to the upcoming urban local body elections and panchayat polls. Several political parties, including the Congress and CPI(M), have accused the ruling BJP of muscle-flexing and suppressing opposition activities.
Earlier this year, multiple instances of political violence were reported from different parts of the state, including attacks on opposition workers, disruption of public meetings, and alleged misuse of administrative machinery.
Democracy and the Right to Dissent
Political observers believe the freedom to assemble and express political views is a cornerstone of any democratic society. Disruption of lawful political meetings raises serious concerns regarding freedom of expression, rule of law, and political tolerance in the state.
Legal experts and civil rights advocates have also condemned the incident and urged the administration to maintain neutrality and ensure a safe environment for all political activities.
Conclusion:
The alleged attack on Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy has once again brought the spotlight on Tripura’s volatile political landscape. As the state prepares for critical local elections, ensuring the safety and freedom of political representatives remains essential for upholding democratic values. The demand for an impartial investigation and accountability is growing louder, and it remains to be seen how the state government and law enforcement respond in the coming days.
