Agartala, June 24:

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the General Railway Police (GRP) at Agartala Railway Station seized a large consignment of contraband cough syrup and cannabis in two separate operations on Monday.

During a routine inspection of the Rajdhani Express, which had just arrived at the station, GRP personnel discovered 270 bottles of Phensedyl, a cough syrup commonly misused as a narcotic. The seized consignment, valued at approximately ₹1.35 lakh, was found abandoned inside one of the train’s compartments. According to Tapas Das, Officer-in-Charge of the GRP station, no individual has been apprehended in connection with the seizure, as the culprits appeared to have fled the scene before police intervention. The syrup was suspected to be en route for smuggling into Bangladesh.

In a separate incident on the same day, the GRP apprehended a woman in possession of a large quantity of Ganja (cannabis). The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was caught with nine packets weighing a total of 21.49 kilograms. She was allegedly attempting to transport the narcotics to Delhi via train. The suspect was found using a trolley to carry the contraband and has since been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. She is scheduled to be produced in court today for police remand.

Despite ongoing enforcement drives and repeated crackdowns, Tripura continues to witness a worrying surge in drug trafficking activities. Law enforcement agencies have flagged the use of various transport routes—including air, rail, and bus—for the illegal trade, raising concerns over regional drug security and cross-border smuggling networks.
