BJP Worker Assaulted in Sepahijala Amid TIPRA Motha Political Tension
Agartala, July 31: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was reportedly assaulted in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Tuesday, sparking a fresh wave of political tension between the BJP and the TIPRA Motha party. The incident has led to outrage among BJP ranks, who claim the attack was a deliberate and politically motivated act linked to the growing friction over indigenous rights and territorial governance.
According to local sources, the incident occurred near the TTAADC (Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council) jurisdiction, an area where TIPRA Motha holds significant political sway. Eyewitnesses stated that a group of unidentified assailants confronted the BJP worker late in the evening and inflicted multiple injuries before fleeing the scene. The victim is currently receiving treatment at a district hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
BJP state spokesperson alleged that the attack was orchestrated by supporters of TIPRA Motha, accusing the regional party of “promoting fear and division under the guise of indigenous empowerment.” He further demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and strict action from law enforcement.
“This is not an isolated incident. Our party workers have repeatedly faced intimidation and violence in tribal areas. The government must ensure political freedom and safety for all,”
said the BJP spokesperson at a press briefing in Agartala.
TIPRA Motha, however, denied involvement in the assault and called for a fair investigation.
“We strongly condemn violence of any kind. Our movement is peaceful and rooted in democratic demands for Greater Tipraland. Any attempt to tarnish our image is politically motivated,”
said a TIPRA Motha representative.
The incident comes at a sensitive time, as the state prepares for upcoming local elections in tribal belts. Political analysts suggest that rising tensions between the BJP and TIPRA Motha reflect deeper challenges in Tripura’s power dynamics, particularly in regions governed by the TTAADC.
Police officials have confirmed that an FIR has been lodged and an investigation is underway.
“We are gathering CCTV footage and questioning locals. No arrests have been made yet,”
said Sepahijala SP Rajiv Dutta.
With tensions escalating in tribal areas, the state government may face increasing pressure to restore peace and prevent further politically charged violence.
