Guwahati, June 28

In a significant policy shift aimed at tackling illegal immigration, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that Aadhaar cards for adults will soon be issued only through the offices of Deputy Commissioners (DCs).

Unlike the existing system where Aadhaar enrollment is done via common service centers and third-party vendors, the new approach will centralize the process under DCs to ensure stricter verification.

“Very soon, we will implement a decision where Aadhaar cards to adult citizens will be issued only by DCs. This will ensure that no illegal immigrant can get an Aadhaar made and we can track and push them back easily,”

Sarma posted on X(Formerly Twitter).

The Chief Minister said the move is part of broader efforts to prevent foreign nationals from exploiting loopholes to acquire Indian identity documents.

Aadhaar, a 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is widely used as proof of identity and residence.

Highlighting the state’s ongoing measures against illegal immigration, Sarma noted that 20 Bangladeshi nationals were recently deported.

“Strengthening Aadhaar rules will help us further in this mission,”

he added.

He mentioned that the decision was discussed at a cabinet meeting and that a formal announcement would be made soon.
