In a statement issued by MAA President Hiren Chandra Kalita and Secretary-General Chandra Kumar Shaikia, the association condemned the minister’s comments describing journalists as “inferior people.” The association called the remarks deeply insulting and urged Mallabaruah to tender an unconditional apology to the journalistic community without delay.
Additionally, the MAA has called on all journalists across the state to boycott Minister Mallabaruah until he offers a formal apology. The association also appealed to political parties to ensure that no minister, MLA, MP, or government official engages in disrespectful or insulting behavior toward members of the media in the future.
Echoing similar sentiments, the Gauhati Press Club voiced its concern over repeated instances of journalists being targeted by politicians when confronted with tough questions. “We have seen MPs, MLAs, ministers, and other party office bearers respond aggressively and insult journalists who ask questions that put them on the spot,” said Susmita Goswami, President of the Gauhati Press Club.
Goswami emphasized that while public figures have the right to choose not to answer questions, they do not have the right to question the credibility of journalists or insult them publicly. “If politicians are not prepared to face questions, they should refrain from inviting the media and instead issue written statements. But no amount of intimidation or insult will deter journalists from performing their duty, and the freedom of the press cannot be suppressed,” she said.
She further urged political leaders and officials to respect the role of journalists and refrain from targeting them for asking difficult questions, underlining that such actions undermine democratic principles.
