Air India Flight Skids Off Runway at Mumbai Airport During Kochi-Mumbai Landing

Mumbai | July 21, 2025
In a major safety scare on Monday morning, Air India Flight AI-2744 from Kochi skidded off the runway at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) amid intense monsoon rain. The Airbus A320 aircraft overshot Runway 27, veered onto a taxiway, and came to a halt without serious damage.

All 132 passengers and 6 crew members were safely evacuated through emergency slides. No injuries were reported, but several passengers were treated for minor shock and anxiety by airport medical teams.

The incident occurred around 9:47 AM, shortly after the pilot initiated landing in extremely low visibility. Airport authorities immediately suspended all operations on the main runway and diverted flights to secondary runways and alternate airports.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the cause of the runway excursion. Preliminary reports suggest hydroplaning due to poor runway drainage as a potential factor.

A spokesperson from Air India stated, “We are cooperating fully with DGCA officials and are conducting an internal safety review. Passenger well-being is our top priority.”

Monsoon rains have continued to disrupt flights across western India, with Mumbai recording over 130 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours alone. Aviation experts are now urging improved runway friction testing and drainage upgrades at high-traffic airports.
